From the Latin "coenaculum" or "dining room", the 2nd story room is above the Tomb of King David on the first floor below. Actual location or not, this experience brings the visitor closer to Jesus Christ and is a wonderful location to read Scripture while giving thanks for God's grace.
The Upper Room is located in Mt. Zion on the southern side of Old Jerusalem. One of the must-see in Mt. Zion during pilgrimage. By tradition, it is where the festive Passover meal with His Apostles took place.
It is where the disciples gathered in fear after the death of Jesus. Jesus appeared in this room on two occasions after the Resurrection. It is here He showed Thomas the wounds in His body. It is where the believers prayed on the Day of Pentecost. The Bible tells us that tongues of fire appeared to them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages Acts At this place the church of Jesus Christ was born. Built atop a church-synagogue constructed in the first century AD, the current structure of the room is a restoration of a 12 th century Crusader chapel.
It is here that archaeologists have uncovered plaster fragments inscribed with Greek graffiti, one of which has been interpreted to contain the name of Jesus. With all of its classic Crusader-era trappings, the room is mostly empty. Decades ago, when first-floor stones were repaired, archeologists found layers of flooring, including mosaic images dated to the Crusader period, suggesting an early church.
The wall niche faces the Temple mount, which suggests an ancient synagogue. Ongoing archeological digs on Mt. Zion uncovered Mediterranean shells that are associated with the purple dye used for Jewish prayer shawls. Today the building houses an active 1st floor synagogue. During Shavous, Jews throng to Mount Zion. The 3rd story is an active mosque. Weddings and other celebrations have been held on the roof itself. There are underground chambers which are not open to the public.
Archeologists found that the original wall around Jerusalem enclosed Mount Zion, whereas the Ottoman Turk reconstruction we see today cuts across Mount Zion itself, leaving it accessible by the Zion Gate which likely did not exist during the Temple era, because that wall did not itself exist.
Researchers agree that Mount Zion has been a site of active religious usage from pre-Crusader times. It is a meaningful place to visit. My comments are based on 16 years of research, visits and interviews. During the excavations done by the Redmond wile in for the Rothschild Foundation, in the southern spur of the City of David which is build on the true Mount Zion above the Gichon spring of the Garden of Eden the Seating Upper Room in a synagogue stile was unearthed.
Within the deferment artifacts a Written Stone in Greek was found telling the same story as found in Luck The birds depicted on the posts are not eagles but pelicans. It became a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself for man — and because of this was frequently represented in Christian art. I believe that this belief started due to a textual association of the Upper room with David in Acts David was buried in the valley of the Kings below in the area of the spur, as no doubt his son King Solomon was, though his tomb has no cenotaph near Davids..
This site is just another spurious, and unproven holy site. I imagine Jesus could have celebrated the feats of Tabernacles, with which the Triumphal Entry and cries of Hoshanna are closely linked to. The room in the greek described as Estronemon, which means covered over no doubt alluded to the Succah covered with the palm fronds which are not in gree bloom and bushiness during this season anymore then the shepherd were out on Dec 25 when anyone who knows Jersualems whether would have frozen to death in a matter of hours.
Jesus last meal could have been anywhere. Maybe here maybe there, in the house of a believer or supporter where he would be assured discretion. I beg to differ. It has the symbol of the Eucharist A mother pelican wounds her chest to feed two of her young with her blood over its four faces, extremely well preserved.
Above it is the minaret of a Muslim mosque ; immediately beneath it is the Jewish shrine venerated as the Tomb of King David though he is not buried there. But archaeological research shows it is constructed on top of a church- synagogue built by the first-century Jewish-Christian community of Jerusalem. Fragments of plaster have been found with Greek graffiti, one of which has been interpreted as containing the name of Jesus. This would have been the first Christian church.
Wherever the site, the original place of the Last Supper would have been a simple dining hall — quite different from those depicted in paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and other artists. Among the architectural details of the Crusader period is a slender marble column supporting a stone canopy in the south-west corner. Carved into the capital at the top of the column are two young pelicans feeding on the blood their mother has drawn from her breast — symbolising Christ giving his blood for the salvation of humankind.
In the 16th century, after the Turks captured Jerusalem, the room was transformed into a mosque in memory of the prophet David. Its mihrab a niche indicating the direction of Mecca and stained-glass windows with Arabic inscriptions remain.
He was the author of the Gospel of Mark and presumably also the young man who fled naked, leaving behind his linen garment, to escape the authorities when Jesus was arrested in the garden at Gethsemane , an event he recorded in Mark This house was a meeting place for the followers of Jesus. It was inside the city walls of Jerusalem, in a quarter that was home to its most affluent residents.
It was also the house to which Peter went after an angel of the Lord released him from prison. Acts says a maid named Rhoda was so overjoyed at recognising his voice that she left him knocking at the outer gate while she went to tell the gathered disciples. Over the centuries the buildings the Franciscans constructed were frequently destroyed and friars were ill-treated and even killed.
